A superb William III walnut and marquetry longcase clock.

The oak case is beautifully veneered in walnut and bird and flower marquetry and has a lenticle to trunk door.  The panelled trunk sides are well executed with inset box wood stringing. The marquetry hood has straight columns and open sound fret above. Excellent colour and patination.

The 11 inch square brass dial is mounted with silvered chapter ring and seconds ring with cherub and foliage spandrels to corners. It has a finely matted centre with ringed winding holes and beautiful floral engraving around day of month aperture. Signed John Shaw Holborne on chapter ring at 6 o’clock position.

The eight day duration movement has five knopped and finned pillars and anchor escapement and strikes the hours on a bell via an inside countwheel. A brass pendulum bob and brassed cased weights complete the clock.

John Shaw was a well known and highly regarded London maker. He was apprenticed to Thomas Taylor of Holborn in 1672 became free of the Clockmakers Company in 1682 and subsequently became master in 1712.
