Michael Bird

MICHAEL BIRD, LONDON C.1685

A fine, late seventeenth century, panelled marquetry longcase clock.

The case, with an original rising hood, has beautiful veneered marquetry and walnut panelling of the highest standards. An early shaped lenticle allows the  pendulum bob to be seen and the original base has elegant bun feet..

The early 11 inch dial has a silvered chapter ring, seconds ring and typical early cherubs head and foliage spandrels. The matted centre has ringed winding holes and an engraved day of the month aperture. Signed Mich. Bird London.

The eight day movement has finely knopped and finned pillars, an anchor escapement and strikes the hours on a bell via an outside countwheel.  A typically early brass bob pendulum and brass cased weights complete the clock.

Michael Bird, apprenticed in 1648 to Thos.Taylor, is listed as working in London and Oxford 1682-1713. ( Baillies )
